Needles / Nepenthes

The Needles tracksuit,
and why it matters.

Slowpoke editorial

Nepenthes has been making the butterfly track in Tokyo since the early 90s. If you know, you know. If you don’t, here’s what’s worth understanding.

The stitch pattern on the side stripe, the thing everyone calls the butterfly, is done on a machine they’ve had since the beginning. Not a vintage machine as aesthetic choice. Just the machine that does the stitch correctly. There’s no newer version of it. That’s the detail that separates the original from the iterations that followed. The seam has a specific weight and movement. It sits differently on the pant. Reproductions exist. They’re obvious.

On the fabric

The jersey Needles uses is a specific weight of polyester that sounds like a compromise and isn’t. It softens over time rather than degrading. It doesn’t pill the way athletic fleece does. A five-year-old pair wears better than a new one. Not as a romantic idea, as a practical reality. The colour holds. The seams stay flat. The waistband doesn’t roll.

On sizing

Japanese sizing runs honest rather than generous. If you wear a medium in most things, size up once. The drop on the track pant is particular: neither tailored nor oversized, the kind of thing that would have taken a designer months to arrive at and reads as completely effortless when worn. It works with a lot.

Why now

These come up used in good condition more often than you’d expect. People buy them for the reference and forget to wear them. They enter the secondary market without the wear that usually accompanies a piece at this profile and price point.

The one we have in now is navy, size M, Excellent condition. Listed four days ago.
